A Huza Holiday

What's my ideal Christmas morning? Gifts wrapped under the tree that are sure to bring some smiles (see my free gift guide below), the smell of my favorite morning brew hovering in the kitchen, the laughter and noise of kids too excited wondering what Santa brought them, and the neat and tidy home waiting for the holiday magic to begin. Everyone has an idea of the perfect Christmas morning, but what about the days AFTER Christmas? Why are the days after Christmas such a drag for some people? Is it because the Christmas magic really is gone? Ok, we're all adults here; we know that Santa didn't really slide his way into our homes bringing the holiday holly jollies and Christmas morning magic. The magic comes in the moments that we share, with people that we love, and in our spaces that we feel at home.

I’m going to share my tips, tricks and even a gift guide below!

Sorry to burst your bubble about the big man, but let's think about why some of us don't feel the magical spirit in the air in the days after Christmas. After so much build up through December anticipating the big day, it all leaves in a flash and what's left is endless trash, paper clutter and boxes. Along with the mess are probably a few gifts we'll put up and never touch again and potentially some laundry and tidying to do after the guests leave. How can we make the days leading into the New Year a little more manageable and less draggy, setting yourself up for success? Create a system that you can maintain not only for the day-to-day clutter, but also for the messy holidays too! So where do you begin? Allow me to help! Spend time in a few spaces in the home that you can easily declutter and maintain to help you get through the busy holiday season.

Here are my Top 5 spaces to hit before the Holiday!

  1. Kitchen: Go through drawers and cabinets to get rid of items you no longer need.

  2. Pantry: Check your inventory, get rid of expired food items before your next shopping trip to the supermarket.

  3. Under sink: In bathrooms because guests will be peeking to see what you have going on under there, it's the perfect time to organize extra supplies such as towels, toiletries for guests you'll be hosting during the holiday season.

  4. Kids' spaces: Get rid of toys that are broken or they have outgrown and donate items they no longer play with. After all, it is the season for giving.

  5. Linen closets: Along with the holiday season comes hosting guests in our homes. It's the perfect time to do inventory of our linen closets and restock. Get rid of old, mismatched sheets and towels. Donate them to animal shelters where they are always in need of them.

Now you know WHERE to declutter and organize, but taking the first step and actually doing it is always the hardest part. It helps if you, have a few products to make the process a little easier.

Here are my TOP 4 Tricks to staying tidy during the Holidays!

  1. Invest in some double duty furniture such as media consoles and cabinets for storage if you don’t already have it. Redecorating and repurposing double duty furniture to "hide the clutter" along with incorporating baskets to hide things like, kid's toys, blankets, paperwork, and décor can make a HUGE difference!

  2. Clean up as you go! Putting things in their rightful place and making sure everything is where it belongs at the end of each day can prevent those everyday life messes from building up and it saves you time the next day. Avoid buying unnecessary things to fill up space.

  3. Have a family calendar or an organizing digital app for all the to-do lists, schedules, holiday functions and activities such as Cozi Family Organizer | Must-Have App For Families Hint: If you have multiple people or kids to keep track of, having each person labeled in a different color is super helpful

  4. Store and organize holiday stationery, like cards, and holiday wrapping supplies in clear, labeled containers so you can easily take inventory of what you have making the holiday season less stressful!

So now that we figured out how to have a tidy holiday, let's talk about gifts. Do you struggle when it comes to gift giving? My secret is to gift something less stressful, more practical and functional! Something that doesn’t take up space in your home, and that you KNOW will get used or enjoyed rather than being thrown on a shelf to collect dust. It’s been said that clutter in the home contributes to stress, anxiety and hinders productivity. So let’s not contribute to someone else’s clutter this year!
