How you too can have a beautifully organized storage room at home.

6 simple tips for keeping your storage spaces functional and organized in your home:

As a professional organizer who has been in plenty of homes and worked on hundreds of different home projects, I can’t tell you how many times we stumble upon a chaotic overpacked storage room.

Much as I understand that it’s the least important space for my client’s because, after all it’s just a storage room…the place where things go to die until needed. Storage spaces play an important role in our homes and how we live.
In my professional opinion it is equally as important as the other spaces in the home. It is the space that holds dear all our useful household items that we don’t want to get rid of and will need at some point in the future. We use our storage rooms in the attics, basements and garages to store seasonal items such as clothes, décor, gardening, kids’ toys, equipment etc.

When it comes to tackling these storage spaces, I know the thought seems overwhelming and daunting but trust me it is not that complicated once you have a system in place to help you keep everything in order.

Here are 6 simple tips that you too can use to keep your storage space functional and organized.

1- Declutter, declutter, declutter:

Make sure to purge any items you no longer need before you put them away. For example, clothes you or your kids have outgrown, shoes, seasonal décor, holiday serve ware, gardening equipment, tools. Storage rooms are notorious for collecting clutter because stuff gets put away and forgotten.
First rule of organizing any space is to get rid of any items no longer sparking joy for you so that you can have space for things that do. Plain and simple.

2- Space Audit:
After you have decluttered and before you go buying organizing products, make sure to take measurements of your storage space first so that you buy the right fitting organizing products such as storage bins, shelves.
This might be a good time to look into making sure you have sturdy shelves to hold all the storage bins you will be putting up.

3- Invest in long-term smart storage:
Invest in sturdy weather-tight storage bins to keep your items protected from elements. As a professional organizer my personal preference is clear bins for my clients sold at the Container Store, Lowes, Home Depot etc. so that they can see what’s stored in the bins even when labeled The Container Store: Storage, Organization & Custom Closets

4– Categorize before organizing:
Avoid mixing different household items in the same bin if you can. Separating and keeping like items together makes it easier for you to find.

5– Label every bin for easy identification:
Labeling will save you time, when you know what’s in the bin it makes it that much easier to just grab what you need when you need it.

6- Maximize all space:
Always look to maximize space in every way possible especially where it’s lacking. Besides storage shelves on the ground, take advantage of empty wall and door space. There are so many products on the market today that help us store items off the floor and on to the wall and ceilings such as racks to hang bikes, sports equipment, tools and storage bins. The container store has a wide variety of organizing solutions to fit your storage space The Container Store: Storage, Organization & Custom Closets

Happy Organizing and as usual, cheering you on as you get create harmony in your home spaces.
